British Anzani Outboards 1942-1979
The British Anzani Engineering Company, Ltd. began as a UK repair shop for airplanes, and was named after engineer, motorcycle racer and engine maker Alessandro Anzani. By 1950 they offered a respectable line of outboards, and during the early postwar era, Anzani put out several class A and B competition outboards.
British Anzani bought Rootes Marine outboard parts, jigs, tools and rights in 1964 embarking on production of the 65-6.5hp, 180-18hp and 400-40hp models up until 1967 as cutbacks due to competitors lingered into the early 1970's, and by 1979 outboard production ended.
Anzani’s manufacturing produced numerous outboard models from 1942-1979 including:
- Minor (1955-1979) ½hp dinghy motor
- Super Single (1942-1979 158cc, 5hp)
- Jet (Single, 60cc, 3hp) a fiberglass cover engine with ‘guarded drive’ for swimmers
- Sports Twin (1950-1951) 316cc 14hp
- Unitwin (1951-1967) these two modes were the most advanced engines
of their day
- Unitwin 242cc 10hp + full race version
- Unitwin 322cc 15hp + full race version
- Pilot (Single, 60cc, 2.5hp) general purpose engine with handle bar around cowl
- Seamaid (Single, 60cc 3hp) fiberglass cover general purpose engine
- Magnatwin (1958-1960 Twin, 344cc, 18hp) large electric start model with remote
- Startwin (1960 Twin, 344cc, 18hp) electric start ‘Contrastart’ forward + reverse
- Supertwin 15 (Twin, 322cc, 15hp) streamlined fiberglass hood
- Unitwin, Fleetwin 20 (Twin, 344cc, 20hp)
- Triton (1960 3 cylinder 30hp, 492cc)
- Dinghy Motor’ (1952) an inboard version of the 4hp Super Single
Perkins / Rootes / Anzani Outboard Identification
In 1964 the Anzani Company bought the Rootes Marine (previously Perkins) outboard business including remnants of the Chris-Craft/Oliver marquee.
Outboard brand names through ownership and production changes:
- - 1959 Oliver agrees to sell outboard sector to Perkins
- Perkins (1959-1961 = 6, 16, 35, 40 hp) (1962-1964 = 4.5, 6.5, 18, 30, 40 hp)
- 1962 Perkins agrees to sell outboard sector to Rootes Marine
- Rootes Marine (1962-1964 = 4.5, 6.5, 18,
30, 40 hp)
- 1964 Rootes agrees to sell outboard sector to British Anzani
- Bitish Anzani (1964-1967 = 6.5, 18, 40 hp)
& all other models 1942-1979
