Coventry Climax F.W.A. F.W.B. F.W.E. Racing Engines
The Coventry Climax FW Engine, Designated FW for "Feather Weight", was designed in 1950 by Walter Hassan and Harry Mundy as a lightweight all-aluminum overhead camshaft engine to be used in portable fire pumps.
The engine was displayed at the London Motor Show and attracted attention from the motor racing fraternity for its very high "horsepower per pound of weight". With strong persuasions at the show from racing legends like Cyril Kieft, Stirling Moss and Colin Chapman, Coventry Climax concluded that success in competition could lead to increased sales, so the FWA, Feather Weight engine for Automobiles was designed.
In 1953 it was adapted for automotive racing as the 1097 cc FWA motor producing 71 hp (53 kW), and was first used at Le Mans in 1954 by Kieft 1100 race cars. The larger bore and longer stroke 1460 cc FWB engine followed producing a nominal 108 bhp (81 kW). The most significant variant was the FWE which used the FWB bore size and the FWA stroke. It was specifically designed for the first generation Lotus Elite vehicles but became a firm favorite with a number of sports car racing firms for its racing durability and high power-to-weight ratio.
The FWA soon became a popular sports car racing engine and was followed by the Mark II and then by the FWB which had a capacity of nearly 1.5-litres and suited new Formula Two regulations. It quickly became the engine of choice for F2 racing and in 1957 it appeared in back of a Formula One Cooper chassis.

Fisher Pierce Bearcat 85 HP Outboard
In the late sixties, Richard Fisher of Boston Whaler designed and development a 4-stroke 85hp Bearcat outboard model. It was a modified light weight Coventry Climax F.W.E. engine married to the Bearcat 85 lower unit.
A similar Coventry Climax engine was used in the Lotus Elite, making the engine far more valuable to the vintage Lotus folks than to the boating world, so many Bearcat 85's have become engine donors for vintage Lotus race cars.
The Bearcat 85 was introduced in 1970 derived from the F.W.E. 4 cylinder Coventry Climax aluminum engine block with 3 main bearings. However, Fisher Pierce ended all outboard production in late 1972 and a separate Bearcat 85 service manual was never produced.
