Clinton Outboard Boat Motor Model Identification

A system of identification has been established that begins with the Name Plate which was permanently attached to the outboard transom mounting bracket at the factory.

Model reference for all service and repair will be derived from this identification name plate. It's important the ID plate remains on the outboard.

There are three basic things that have to be taken from the outboard name plate to be able to locate the parts needed in the sales - service manual.

Some models employ modified variations:

1. Model number
2. Variation number
3. Type letter

VARIATION NUMBERS

A complete list of modified models, referred to as MODEL VARIATIONS, will be found at the end of each Basic Parts List. The model variation list will tell what parts or assemblies are used on each variation "IN ADDITION TO or IN PLACE OF" standard parts found on Basic Parts Lists.

How to determine model type:

The type letter designates when a part design has changed making the old part obsolete. When a part or assembly is not used on all types, it is noted in the basic model parts list. If no note appears, then the part is used on all types. The type letter is a suffix following the model number as seen in example (J700-1106C) image above.

In 1946, The Clinton Machine Company founded by Bill Thomas was established to manufacture small gasoline engines. First located in Clinton, Iowa, they purchased a 200,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Maquoketa, Iowa, and in 1957 Clinton introduced its own line of 5-horsepower air-cooled outboard motors. Then in 1958, Clinton Machine Company changed their name to Clinton Engines Corporation.

• J6 models also made for Sears, see J6 parts list for variations

• J8 models may also be badged Apache, Chief, Clinton, Peerless, Sprite
• J9 models were produced from 1959-1967 and may have been badged:
  • Apache, Chief, Clinton, Featherweight, Gulf Queen, Peerless
• J200 thru J700 also produced as Montgomery Ward "Sea King" models

Clinton outboard production was halted in 1980 when Eska purchased the Clinton outboard motor product line to consolidate area manufacturers and maintain a strong hold on the market challenged by a lagging economy. In 1986, Eska production ended.
