Clinton Outboard Boat Motor Model Identification
A system of identification has been established that begins with the Name Plate which was permanently attached to each outboard at the factory. The reference for all Service and Repair will be found on this Name Plate. It is very important that the plate remain with the outboard.
There are three basic things that have to be taken from the outboard name plate to be able to locate the parts needed in the sales - service manual.
1.
Model number.2. Variation number.
3. Type letter.
VARIATION NUMBERS
Due to varied employment of many series, there may be a large number of models. A complete list of these models, referred to as MODEL VARIATIONS, will be found following each Basic Parts List. The model variation list following each Basic Parts List will tell what parts or assemblies are used on each variation - IN ADDITION TO or IN PLACE OF the standard parts found in the Basic Parts List.
How to determine type:
The type letter is very important as it designates when a part design change has taken place and the original part set up for this model outboard will not work. Whenever a part or assembly is not used on all types, this will be noted in the basic model parts list. If no note appears, this means that the part will be found on all types. The type letter on an outboard is always shown as a suffix letter following the model number J 700-1106C is an example as seen in image above.

In
1946, The Clinton Machine Company founded by Bill Thomas was established
to manufacture small gasoline engines. First located in Clinton, Iowa,
they purchased a 200,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Maquoketa,
Iowa, and in 1957 Clinton introduced its own line of 5-horsepower air-cooled
outboard motors. Then in 1958, Clinton Machine Company changed their
name to Clinton Engines Corporation.
Additional Clinton outboard brand names include:
- Apache, Chief, Featherweight, Gulf Queen, Peerless, Sprite
- J5 models may also be badged Apache, Clinton, Sprite
- J6 models also made for Sears, see J6 parts list for variations
- J7 models may also be badged Apache, Chief, Clinton, Peerless, Sprite
- J8 models may also be badged Apache, Chief, Clinton, Peerless, Sprite
- J9 models were produced from 1959-1967 and may have been badged:
- Apache, Chief, Clinton, Featherweight, Gulf Queen, Peerless
- J200 thru J700 also produced for Montgomery Ward "Sea King"
Clinton outboard production was halted in 1980 when Eska purchased the Clinton outboard motor product line. The purchase was intended to consolidate area manufacturers and maintain a strong hold on the market which had dropped due to a lagging economy. In 1986, Eska Outboard Motors went out of production.
