Eska Outboard Boat Motor Model Identification

The identification plate on Eska outboards is located on the swivel bracket beneath the engine, the underside of the engine, or on the transom mounting bracket, depending on the model and year of the outboard, as shown in Figure 1. Always list model and serial numbers when corresponding.

The Eska Power Heads were all manufactured by Tecumseh (Tec) Engines.

About: Eska Outboards

Bud Essman and Lavern Kascel formed the ESKA Company in 1945. The name of the company was created from the first two letters of Essman and Kasel. The Eska Company began as a shipping firm to distribute farm toys. When debt outran the companies assets, Carter Tru-Scale took over, and then William A. Wright, Jr. joined the company to help develop products.

By the early 1960’s, Wright had developed a small inexpensive fishing motor. Eska outboard motors where manufactured from 1961 to 1987 and sold under numerous brand names (badges). Many Department Stores, Hardware Stores and some Auto Parts Stores sold these outboards. Some were sold under the Eska name and some under a private brand.

Eska Power Heads were all manufactured by Tecumseh (Tec) Engines. These Power Heads were all Air Cooled, except the 9.9 through 15 horsepower Twin Cylinders. Most Eska outboards had water cooled exhaust columns using “ram tubes” (small engines), or rubber impeller pumps (larger engines). Eska outboards used common ignition and carburetor vendors so tune-up parts remained available after manufacturing ended.

In 1970, Wright and his partners sold the Eska Company which became a subsidiary of Talley Industries, who in 1980 purchased the Clinton outboard motor product line from the Clinton Engines Corp. The purchase consolidated manufacturers for added market strength in a lagging economy. Unfortunately, with the poor economy and foreign competition, Eska ended production in 1986 with remaining stock sold thru 1987.
