Flambeau Outboard Model Identification

Model and Year Guide: 1946-1956

Flambeau Outboards were manufactured by the Metal Products Corporation of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Two models were produced from 1946-1956, a single cylinder 2.5hp model, and a twin cylinder 5hp model. A 1950 advertisement stated 3.0 hp and 6.0 hp but 1951 ads returned to 2.5 and 5 hp (more conservative horsepower ratings). Early Models up thru 1949 were all alloy gray, from 1950 on, top ends were painted burgundy red with the transom bracket assembly and shaft leg still being alloy gray. They utilized Eiseman 62B magneto's and an 8" diameter by 8 1/2" pitch two blade weedless propeller with a patented mechanism eliminating the need for a sheer pin.

Flambeau Outboard Boat Motor Production

Flambeau outboards are notable for their unique vertical-split top to bottom all inclusive and distinctive engineered case design. The combined engine block and drive shaft case split vertically in a two piece "left and right" housing, allowing easy access to internal components. The pistons in cast iron barrels, along with bearings, crankshaft, drive shaft and remaining assembly parts were glued in place using Gasolia sealer as both halves were screwed together. However, adjoining seal problems often created reliability issues requiring major disassembly.

The crankcase, exhaust and cooling channels were formed in the castings around the cylinder barrels. Carburetors mounted to the bottom of the fuel tanks which were also part of the top end.

Flambeau sales weren't very market competitive having limited distribution to sporting goods, hardware and auto stores like Western Auto.

Despite the odd engineering, Flambeau outboards provided a low profile design that made their outboards stand out among bulkier competitor models, and well cared for units can run smooth and produce sufficient competitive horsepower.

Carburetors Used On Flambeau Outboards

Early models had two adjusting knobs for high and low speeds, while later models had a Uni-Lever that controlled gears on the needles allowing single lever adjustment.
