Gale Manufactured Outboard Motors were produced from 1941-1963

Gale Products was formed in 1937 and was named after their location in Galesburg, Illinois. Prior to Word War II they manufactured refrigerators and air conditioning units. In 1941, OMC (Outboard Marine Corporation) acquired Gale Products Inc. for outboard production, and became a subsidiary of OMC who also produced Johnson and Evinrude.

In 1945 after the war, Gale organized a wholesale division and continued manufacturing focus on outboard motors for department, hardware and tire store chains. These outboards were labeled with brands by the selling companies, including:

• Gale "Buccaneer" 1950-1963

• Goodyear "Sea Bee" 1948-1959
• Montgomery Ward "Sea King" 1941-1962
• Spiegel "Brooklure" 1950-1958
• T Eaton Co. "Viking" 1933-1942
• Western Auto "Western Flyer" 1941-1942

Gale products were so successful that in 1948 they sold over 100,000 outboard motors, (more than all other manufacturers including Mercury, Johnson and Evinrude). Starting in 1949, Gale began to offer outboards under their own brand name initially called Buccaneer and later just labeled Gale.

Gale and Buccaneer outboard motors were offered through sporting goods and hardware stores along with a few independent dealerships. Outboard motors built by Gale were very well designed including deluxe models offering new features like fuel pumps, better soundproofing, vibration dampening and rubber engine mounts.

Gale outboard models produced ranged in size from 1-1/2 horsepower up to a V4 60 hp and were generally a few horsepower less then Johnson and Evinrude, ie. Gale 12hp - Johnson 15hp. After 1963, OMC dropped all Gale outboard production in order to concentrate on their Johnson and Evinrude outboard brands.
