Lauson Outboard Model and Year Guide: 1940-1956

On older 410 models, the ID code may be stamped on the outboards transom mounting bracket somewhere. See Table Below for Yearly Models

Starting in 1948 Lauson single and twin cylinder 4-stroke outboards have a model I.D. tag below the power head attached to the transom clamp right at the top of the transom saddle. Lawson outboard serial numbers break down to specific model years as shown in the groupings list below.

About: Lauson Outboards

Lauson outboards were manufactured by the Hart Carter Corporation (engines and farm machinery manufacturer) in New Holstein Wisconsin from 1940 through 1956.

Lauson Manufacturer Hart Carter sold to Tecumseh in 1956, and in 1957 Tecumseh also acquired the Power Products Company – maker of 2 cycle engines.

Tecumseh engines were used on many outboard brands including; Lauson, Sears Gamefisher, Ted Williams and Eska - which also produced private brands for auto, hardware and department store chains.

Lauson Sportking outboards were billed as the "Cadillac" of outboards for fisherman and sported a number of innovative features, the most unique being that all of their outboards utilized 4-cycle engines.

The advantages of 4-cycle engines are high fuel economy and excellent slow speed operation compared to 2-strokes.

Lauson Outboard Boat Motor Production

In the early 1940's, Lauson produced the OB-410, a small single cylinder 2.5hp outboard. This was followed by the 300 and 600 series outboard motors beginning in 1948 which generally had Wico magneto Ignition and Tillotson Carburetors

These engines were all 4-Cycle and air cooled by fan blades on the flywheel directing air over the cooling fins on the cylinder. To properly cool, the lower engine covers must be in place for proper air flow or the engine will overheat the coils and cause them to fail, evidence of melted coil insulation is often cited.

The On/Off knob on the front of the engine kills the spark and closes the crankcase breather so the engine can be transported without losing oil.

R and N designations: T651 R, the R designates the F-N-R shift model which Lauson abandoned as troublesome for a simpler F-N "declutching" arrangement "T653 N".
