Mercury Outboard History and Evolution 1939-2022+
Mercury Marine® started back in 1939 when E. Carl Kiekhaefer purchased a defunct engine manufacturing plant in Cedarburg, Wis. Included in the plant assets were 300 Thor outboard engines "named after Thorwald Hansen, founder of the original engine company". The engines had been rejected by retailer "Montgomery Wards" due to defects. After assuming control of the bankrupt manufacturing plant, Kiekhaefer sketched a rendering for improving the engine design, and with these modifications, Montgomery Wards purchased and sold them under the brand name Sea King.
In January of 1940 at the New York Motorboat Show, Kiekhaefer introduced his new line of 1 and 2 cylinder outboards labeled Mercury after the roman god of speed, where he sold 16,000 units launching the Mercury brand evolution.
Mercury Marine Outboard Model Identification
Every Mercury outboard has a serial number label located on the transom bracket area of the engine. The latest serial number labels display a 2-digit number in a box at the lower right portion of the label. These digits coincide with the last two digits of the year in which the outboard was manufactured. For example, if an outboard was manufactured in 2010, the number "10" would appear in the box at the lower right portion of the label.
