Muncie / Neptune Outboard Motor Model Identification

Production outboards were identified by A, B, or C in model codes. Those with A were Neptune, B were Muncie and C were built for third party catalog sales. All model numbers started with "OB" until 1938. From 1938 thru 1939 example is "2A38" indicates "2=horsepower, A= Neptune, 38=1938". 1940 models started with 10 -through- 1947 models that started with 17) "example 10A2: 10=1940, A=Neptune, 2=2hp". No motors were built during the war 1942-1945. 1948+ code example "A2" (A=Neptune, 2=horsepower "hp could vary 2-3.3hp+-").

Muncie Gear Works Corporation was founded in Muncie, Indiana about 1910. They got into outboard motor production in 1930 building a 2hp opposed twin follower by many other hp models. The Mighty Mite was the last survivor in production until 1984. Muncie Gear Works manufactured outboard motors that included many brand names including:

• Muncie
• Neptune
• Sea Gull
• Skipper
• Mighty Mite
• Sea King brand for Montgomery Wards
• Motorgo and Waterwitch brands for Sears

From this modest beginning came a line of outboard motors that spanned almost 60 years. In 1938 they produced the "The Junior Single" which would evolve into the popular Neptune Mighty Mite. From 1948 to 1956 specifications remained static, though no outboards were produced in 1952 and 1953. However, in 1954, the AA1 and some A1 leftovers were assembled and sold. Model designation 1957 to 1960 was AA1A, and changed to WC1 circa 1972, later become known as the Mighty Mite style motors.

In 1956 Muncie moved the outboard motor production to Cordele Georgia, and introduction of the 17A1 model brought out the first appearance of the name Mighty Mite name along with the AA1A in 1956/57, previously called Junior Singles. 1960 thru 1969 the most common Mighty Mite was designated WC1, commonly know as the “Gold Bug” or “Gold Fish” motor.

In 1970 the outboard business was sold to a former employee E. Ray Abrams who moved production back to Cordele and then to Lehigh Acres, Florida doing business as Telmar Corporation.

From 1970 to around 1978 the Model 500 was produced as an updated version of the WC1, with the Model 700 also being called Mighty Mite. Sometime in 1979 the Telmar Corp was sold to a group of investors and renamed Mighty Mite Marine. Then a totally redesigned Model 800 appeared with three versions, the 800A, 800B and the Mighty Mite III. Decals on the shroud said "Mighty Mite" and "Neptune".

The last Muncie outboards were assembled no later than January 1987 with remnants being dispersed sometime between 1989 to 1993.
