OMC Sea Drive Outboard Technical Data
In the early 1980's, a surge in interest for marine products led to the introduction of the Sea Drive Power System, an outboard motor designed to replace inboards in larger boats. OMC had been working on the SeaDrive for two years before its introduction in 1981.
SeaDrive outboard motors utilized their own innovative self-contained stern mounted set back bracket and tilt mechanism with hydraulics sealed against sea water intrusion. They attached to a full transom - instead of notched transom mounting common with other outboard motors. The Sea Drive engines were always marketed by their displacement specification, but horsepower ratings were often listed in the service manual specifications pages. OMC Sea Drive History
OMC Sea Drive's were manufactured in a number of displacements, including a 1.6-litre displacement V4 engine that produced about 115-HP, V6 engines in displacements of 2.5-litres 155-HP, and 2.6-liters 205-HP. Then in 1987 they added 1.8-liter 140-HP, 2.7-liter 225-HP, and 3.6-liter 275-HP models, and in 1988 2.0-liter 140-HP and 3.0-liter 225-HP models, and in 1989 the largest 4.0-liter 300-HP model was introduced. The Sea Drive was an alternative for both inboard/outboard (stern drive) power, and bracket-mounted outboards which were just becoming popular at that same time. Production continued into the early 1990's.
Model Identification
Locate OMC outboard model and serial number plates
- "Examples" numbers under engine hood state: Model # 983775 Serial
# 366956
- ID plates are mounted on the engine: One is on the port side of the mid section, and the other plate is inside the engine cowling on the port side.
- Engine ID: Look for the model ID stamped on what looks like
a freeze plug.
- Example: Freeze plug # E235TXCOR identifies Sea Drive as Evinrude, 235hp
