Scott-Atwater Outboard Boat Motor Model Identification

Locate Scott-Atwater outboard serial number and model identification plate on your motor's transom mount.

• 1946-1951 outboards have three digit model numbers. The first two digits are the year, and the last digit correlates for horsepower.
  • 0 = Standard Single, 1 = Deluxe Single, 3 = 7.5 Hp Twin, 6 = 30 Hp Twin, 7 = 5 Hp Twin, 8 = 10 Hp Twin, 9 = 16 Hp Twin
• 1952-1958 outboards have a four digit model number. Outboards 16hp and under - reverse the last two digits for the year, and the first two digits correlate to horsepower - see serial plate image, - and model horsepower reference here > (30 = 3.6 hp) (37 = 5 hp) (33 = 7 1/2 hp) (38 = 10 hp) (39 = 16 hp)
  • ABOVE SAMPLE PLATE: model # 3875,  38 = 10hp and 75 = 1957
• 1952-1958 over 16hp have first two digits in order for actual horsepower

About: Scott-Atwater Outboards

In 1932, Cliff Scott and H. Bruce Atwater started a small tool making and punch press operation, and in 1935 Earl DuMonte who had purchased the rights to Champion outboard motor from Sig Konrad, approached them to build Champion outboards. From 1935 to 1939 the Champion name was used, and in 1939 DuMonte landed a contract with Firestone to sell Champion outboards in their tire stores. Scott and Atwater turned to building outboards full time as their relationship with DuMonte and Champion outboards lasted until 1942.

After World War II, Firestone, sensing post war demand, stayed with Scott-Atwater and in 1946 Firestone outboards reentered the market. Scott and Atwater would also offer motors through traditional boat stores under the SCOTT-ATWATER brand.

In 1956, Scott-Atwater was approached by McCulloch and a deal was made to sell their outboard operation. This deal ended production of Corsair outboards, an outboard that Scott-Atwater had produced since 1946.

From 1957 on their outboard brand name changed from Scott-Atwater to Scott and Scott-McCulloch, and by 1964 all of the motors were branded McCulloch. In 1966, McCulloch was looking to sell the outboard motor business, but with no buyer, it shut down in late 1967.

The following brands were produced by Scott-Atwater. Though (Firestone) would be licensed to other manufacturers after being discontinued by Scott-Atwater.
