Sears Outboard Boat Motor Model Identification Guide

Sears & Roebuck contracted with many outboard motor manufacturers from 1914 thru 1996, and over the years this included many brand name changes along the way.

About: Sears & Roebuck Sears Outboards

Sears-Roebuck got into the outboard business about 1914 with it's Motorgo kickers that were produced by a number of manufacturers including Lockwood Ash motors and Caille outboards. By 1934 Sears outboard brand name changed to Waterwitch, which were supplied by Muncie Gear Works (Neptune), and a few leftover Johnsons.

Around 1936 Sears struck contracted with Kissel Automobile Co. to build outboard motors. The Waterwitch motors were a very successful product for Sears. After WWII ended, Kissel was purchased by the West Bend Aluminum Company and Sears struck a deal with West Bend to piece together the last of the Waterwitches before producing a new line of Sears Elgin brand outboards through 1959.

In 1959 Sears contracted with Scott-Atwater, by then being purchased by McCulloch - and known as Scott McCulloch. This relationship would last through the late 1960s. In 1964 the Elgin name was dropped in the USA and replaced with that of spokesperson Ted Williams and additionally as well as with just the Sears brand name.

In 1965 West Bend sold to Chrysler and by the 1980s, Chrysler marine sold to US Marine/Force as the Sears brand once again changed to the private brand Gamefisher outboard motors. Some Gamefishers were made by Tanaka of Japan, which are identified by the model number prefix of 298!

Some time around 1966 or later Sears also marketed Clinton J6 outboards under the Sears brand.
