About: Arctic Ent. Inc. / Spirit Marine Outboard Motors
The Arctic Enterprises Inc. division "Spirit Marine" marketed Spirit outboard boat motors (manufactured by Suzuki) for years 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981
Arctic
Enterprises Inc. (i.e. Arctic Cat) imported Suzuki produced outboards
beginning in 1976 and private labeled them as Spirit Marine. In return
Suzuki did not enter the U.S. market until Arctic Ent. went bankrupt
allowing Suzuki the opportunity to enter the U.S. market in 1982 with
Suzuki branded outboards.
Prosperous times in the early 1970's gave Arctic Enterprises the ability to diversify as they acquired boat manufacturer Silverline Inc. of Moorhead, Minnesota. At the same time, a new division of Arctic Ent. "Spirit Marine" began marketing and selling Spirit Outboards. Then in 1977, Arctic Enterprises purchased Lund American Boats which included the Shell Lake boat Company gaining control of its manufacturing facilities in Wisconsin and Canada.
In 1980 trying times ensued as Arctic Enterprises lost $11.5 million during the year, followed by another $10 million loss the following year. As losses continued, bankers called for the payment of $48.5 million in loans on February 6 1981. Eleven days later, Arctic Enterprises filed for protection under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Act.
