Tanaka introduced their first model in 1974 with additional models being manufactured up until 2002.

Tanaka outboard engines over the years range between .75 and 5.5 horsepower and were marketed in Japan and in the United States during production years.

These outboard motors were badged with the Tanaka name as well as other brands when sold through dealerships and department stores like Sears and Eska, which often carried the brand model names AquaBug or SuperBug.

About: Tanaka Outboards

Tanaka Kogyo Co., Ltd. was established in 1918 by Takashi Tanaka in Japan. It began as "Tanaka Iron Works" near Tokyo while expanding its manufacturing plant in 1941, and then changed the company name to Tanaka Kogyo Co. Ltd in 1950. In 1948, research and development of a compact internal combustion engine began which eventually lead to the world's smallest industrial general-purpose 2-cycle engine.

Tanaka outboard motors were well-regarded for their efficient performance and ease of use, making them a popular choice for small boats and fishing enthusiasts. Their air-cooled 2-stroke gasoline fueled engines were known for their lightweight design and construction, which contributed the nature of their popularity. They produced several horsepower models including; .75hp, 1.0hp, 1.2hp, 1.75hp, 2.5hp, 3.0hp and 5.5hp. In 2002 production ceased due to emission standard changes.

Tanaka produced some models for Sears and Eska.
The Tanaka "TAS" designation is part of the brand identity, often used in context with Tanaka's outdoor power equipment like mowers and outboards. "TAS" refers to Tassie State, referencing Tasmania, Australia, where Tanaka is regarded for its manufacturing.
