Tecumseh Engine Identification
Tecumseh has used two different methods of identifying 2 cycle engines. The first method was used until the mid 1980's using the base model number with a type number. The type number was used to identify variations for the OEM's specific needs. The second method was put in place to standardize 2 cycle and 4 cycle engine identification. The type number has now become the specification number, which is preceded by the engine model as illustrated in the Tecumseh Identification Guide.
About: Tecumseh Engines and Outboard Brands
The Tecumseh Products Company was founded in the 1950s, and purchased Lauson Manufacturer Hart Carter in 1956, and also acquired the Power Products Company (manufacturer of 2 cycle engines) in 1957. These companies were integrated into the Tecumseh Power Division after the purchases. Tecumseh outboard engines were produced in both 2-cycle and 4-cycle configurations with various horsepower ratings.
While Tecumseh never produced complete outboards, they did build all the powerhead engine units for the Eska company from 1961 to 1987. Eska built outboards were marketed under the following brand names "with Eska model numbers": Aquabug, Barracuda, Blue Jet, Coast to Coast, Colt, Eska, Explorer, Federals, Fury, Golden Arrow, Golden Jet, Hanimex, Hiawatha, Pathfinder, Sea Hawk, Seabreeze, Seaco, Seacruiser, Sears (Canada), Skipper, Sportfisher, Superbug, Voyager and Wiljo.
Eska produced many of these Tecumseh engine powered private label brand outboards for auto, hardware, marine supply, sporting goods and department store chains.
Tecumseh engines in other popular outboard brands using "their own model numbers" included: JC Penney, Lauson, Gamefisher, Sea King, Ted Williams and Wizard.
Obscure Tecumseh powerhead outboard brands: Triton Industries "Arrow Marine Corp." (Marina & Spur), CB Tool Co. (Guppy), California Jet Marine (Cal-Jet), D.R. Clark Engine Co., Commando Motors (Commando V & Husky) Eska (Flying "O"), Farrow Mfg. (Aqua Jet), Laminar Corp., Leeders Pacific, Mono Mfg. Co. (Mono), Schnacke Mfg., Span Boats Inc. (Hydo-Jet), Terry Troller Mfg. (Terry-Troller MY-TE), Wilco Ind. (Swim Slim).
