About: Tohatsu Outboard Production
In 1956 Tohatsu introduced their first outboard engine. Since then, Tohatsu has been producing outboard engines for commercial fishing, marine transport, recreation and competition. In January 2005, Tohatsu opened a new 370,000 sq. ft state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in central Japan with technologically advanced machinery enabling a production capacity of over 200,000 outboards per year.

- 1988 Tohatsu Marine Corporation is established in Okaya City, Nagano
- 1998 Manufacturing of Tohatsu four-stroke outboard engines began
- 2000 Manufacturing of Tohatsu 2-cycle low-pressure direct injection (TLDI) began
- 2005 Tohatsu relocated from Okaya City to Komagane City
- 2016 60th anniversary of Tohatsu outboard producition

Tohatsu Marine Outboard Motor Model Identification
How to Identify a Tohatsu Outboard Boat Motors by the Model/Serial Numbers
In order to determine the model year of your outboard, you will need the serial number and the model number of your outboard. For motors produced prior to 2003, contact Tohatsu with the 5 digit serial number to request the model year.
For motors produced in 2003 and beyond, the serial number (6 numbers + 2 letters) will indicate the Production Year* of the motor using the 2 letter code at the end of the serial number. Look up each letter in the table image below to determine the production year.
Note:
* Production year may not be the same as "model year" as models
are introduced at different times of each year.
