About: Eaton's Viking Outboards
The
T. Eaton Company Limited, commonly known as Eaton’s, was a Canadian
department store chain that was founded in 1869, and sold Viking branded
outboard boat motors from 1933 to 1969.
The T. Eaton Co. Ltd. department stores in Canada sold name brand outboard motors produced by various manufacturers including:
- Evinrude from 1913 to 1924
- Johnson from 1925 to 1930
- Muncie from 1930 to 1932
1933 Eaton's private brand Viking introduced
- OMC Gale from 1933 to 1942
- 1943-1945 production halted during war
- Gale sourced from Johnson 1946 to 1964
- Chrysler Marine from 1964 to 1969
In 1933, Eaton introduced their private brand “Viking” outboard motors manufactured by OMC which had been formed when Stephen Briggs of Briggs & Stratton went on to start the Outboard Marine Corporation with Frederick P. Stratton Sr. in 1929 from the merger of Ole Evinrude’s second outboard venture, the ELTO Outboard Motor Company, with Lockwood-Ash Motor Company as well as Evinrude and Johnson outboards.
In
1935 OMC purchased the Johnson Motor Company adding it to their line
of outboards.
In 1938, OMC,s parent company Gale Products created the Gale Division which began supplying Eaton with their “Viking” badged engines. World War II saw all production between 1942 to 1945 go to the war effort. From 1946 to 1964, the “Viking” badged engines were sourced by Gale from the Johnson Canada plant in Peterborough, Ontario. Eaton’s concurrently sold name brand outboards including Evinrude.
In 1964, Gale stopped selling private brand engines for resale by companies like Eaton’s, so Eaton’s turned to Chrysler Marine to supply their “Viking” badged line of engines.
In 1969, Eaton’s ceased sales of Viking badged engines in favor of name brand engines, and ceased selling outboard motors shortly thereafter. Eaton’s filed for bankruptcy in 1999 and was acquired by Sears Canada in 2000.
