Scat Personal Watercraft Introduction
The original Scat hovercraft type Scat-1 model was introduced in 1986 and included a Rotax 277 engine producing 26 HP. The hovercraft fan provides approximately 1/3 of its air flow to the bottom skirt segments that hang around the hovercraft in order to provide lift. These skirt segments are bags that are open at the bottom and towards the under-hull trapping air and allowing pressure to quickly build up under the hovercraft.
When the pressure gets high enough (weight/area), the hovercraft
will lift up from the substrate rising to a height where air leaks out
stabilizing its hovering height. The remaining 2/3 of air flow provides
forward propulsion as air passes through two rudders that are used to
steer the hovercraft via handlebars, throttle and rider weight shift.
A stator governs the rotation in fan airflow from lift to more propulsion.
SCAT hovercraft have a fiberglass deck with gel-coat finish and an ABS
plastic hull that includes three protective aluminum bottom skids. Scat
hovercraft were built in Miami, Florida, from the late 1980s to the
mid 1990s when the company went bankrupt. It was sold to a fellow in
Singapore (Captain Tommy Chia) in the early 2000's.
