Surf-Jet Personal Watercraft Introduction
During high school and college, George Carter designed and constructed a motorized surfboard, which completed its first lake test in 1964. Two years later, Carter’s Surfjet production prototype was constructed US Patent 3,324,822.
This Original Surf-Jet surfboard invention featured a gas powered water-cooled engine coupled to an axial flow jet pump, the same basic system still used by all personal watercraft.
Surf-jet's early boards used a Subaru marine twin cylinder water-cooled 255 cc engine with reed valve intake, CDI ignition, stainless steel fasteners, sacrificial zinc anode and ignition safety stop system. Just a few of the many features that have made Surf-jet's trouble free. I believe the 1984 236 Freestyle Surf-Jet used a Fuji 255cc 2 stroke, 2 cylinder motor with Robin BV22 or BV24 carburetor.
Surfjet's patented Hydroforce centrifugal jet pump is lightweight, compact and efficient. It's integral noise reduction design actually increases power while reducing sound levels. The fiber-reinforced ZYTEL impeller saves reciprocating mass that translates to increases response.
George Carter developed his Surf-Jet under his company "Wild Thing Watercraft" until 1998, when the company went bankrupt. Surf-Jet operated out of several locations under different entities including: The Surf-Jet Corporation (a Hartzell Corporation Company) that resided at 715 Raymond Ave. in St Paul Minnesota 55114. SurfJet Division - Progressive Power Corporation which resided at 504 S. Washington Street in Janesville Wisconsin 53545.
