Champion Boat Motor Model Identification
See Table Below: Champion Outboard Models by Year.
Champion outboard motors had several inceptions over the years where outboards were produced by 4 different entities (manufacturing facilities) from 1927 through 1957, excluding 1943 through 1945 when production was halted during world war II.
Little information is available for the first two. Identification information can be found in the table below for the later two.
About: Champion Outboard Boat Motors
In 1927 Henry Dolan, Sig Conrad and Dutch Witch from St. Paul, Minnesota produced approximately 30 small 1.5 HP outboards and branded them "Champion".
In 1928 the "Champion" name was sold to Flour City Ornamental Iron Co. who produced outboards in Minneapolis Minnesota, until around 1934. These were unrelated to newer Champion branded outboards.
In 1935, Stanley Grey and Earl DuMonte founded Champion Outboard Motors. DuMonte contracted C.E Scott and H.B.Atwater (who later became "Scott-Atwater") to manufacture their outboards which lasted for a period of 8 years (1935 through 1942), with production halted from 1943 through 1945 during World War II.
1n 1946 after the war, DuMonte purchased manufacturing facilities where Champion outboards designed by Ralph Herrington and Dale Kloss were produced from 1946 through 1957, including Champion Blue Ribbon motors. However, with poor sales and low financial resources, Champion closed it's doors in 1957.
In 1958 Western Tool and Stamping of Des Moines, Iowa purchased the Champion name and patents. Airmotive Machining and Engineering Corporation retained all tooling, fixtures and spare parts.
In 1959 Western Tool and Stamping developed prototype 12, 25, 50 and 75 hp outboards but declined to invest in tooling.
In 1961 Lyle Swanson "Swanson's Outboard Motor Service" obtained all remaining parts, tooling and prints from Airmotive Machining and Engineering forming the "Champion Outboard Motor Parts Factory",
In 1962 Dale Kloss and friends purchased the prototypes, prints, patents and the Champion name from Western Tool, forming K&K Manufacturing. Here the trail grows cold for Champion outboards.
