Chris Craft / Oliver / Perkins Outboard Model Identification
Outboard brand names through ownership and production changes:
- Chris Craft (Challenger and Commander)
1949-1953
- 1954 Chris Craft agrees to sell outboards sector to Oliver
- Oliver (J-Challenger, K-Commander, B2-Olympus)
1955-1959
- 1959 Oliver agrees to sell outboard sector to Perkins
- Perkins Outboards (4.5, 6.5, 18, 30, 40
hp) 1961-1963
- 1964 Perkins agrees to sell outboard sector to British Anzani
The
chain of ownership began with Chris Craft outboards which sold to the
Oliver Corporation in 1954, who sold to Perkins with Perkins production
starting in 1959. Perkins then sold to British Anzani in 1964.
Chris Craft Outboards 1949-1953
The boat builder "Chris Craft" ventured into the outboard motor business in the late 1940's with the 5 1/2hp Challenger & 10hp Commander outboards. These two models were offered through the 1953 season with the Challenger 5.5hp and Commander 10hp outboard production running from 1949-1953. The first couple years saw many changes for the Commander, with a special racing lower unit model being produced toward the end of production.In 1954 Chris Craft was looking to get out of the outboard business most likely due to legal challenges from Kiekhaefer Mercury over patent infringements.

Chris Crafts successful boat building and inboard motor business may
have caused Christ Craft to focus in these areas, rather than developing
additional products to compete with other outboard manufacturers including:
OMC, Scott Atwater, Johnson & others.
