The Fageol 44 cu. in. 35 hp Economy 4-Cycle Outboard
The
Fageol 44 Economy Outboard was a front runner in 4-stroke outboard design
and was originally produced from 1955 - 1958. The 4-stroke motor history
began back in the early 1940's with Lloyd M Taylor of Taylor Engines
who developed this light weight 4-stroke engine. The unique process
involved steel stampings which were assembled by copper hydrogen brazing
with a finished block weight of only 14 pounds.
Paul Klotsch who was an engineer at Crosley Motors Inc. negotiated an exclusive license from Taylor Engines to produce these motors for the military. They were used to power water pumps, generators with many other applications.
In 1952 the tooling and rights for this 4 cylinder engine were sold to Aero-Jet General with the primary interest being production of engines for military use. Aero-Jet ventured into the marine market creating a complete inboard propulsion system by attaching this motor to a Vee-Drive.
Then in 1955 Lou Fageol a well known Boat Racer and president of Fageol Twin Coach Company came up with the idea of producing a 4 cycle outboard motor while recovering from injuries he suffered flipping his boat in a Gold Cup boat race in Seattle. It was a combination of the VIP (Vertical Inboard Power) Crosley 44 cu in motor vertically mounted on an outboard lower unit. This became one of the first 4 cycle outboards ever produced,
In 1956 the Fageol "44" outboard was introduced with the (35 hp) motor mounted on a Scott Atwater lower unit. A Gold Cup "60" (55 hp) was added to the line in 1957. By 1958 the production line included 35, 40 and 55 horsepower versions.
Fageol Products Company was sold to Crofton Marine Engine Company of Los Angeles in 1959 with Crofton continuing Fageol replacement parts production along with manufacturing some Crofton 44 labeled motors for auto and marine use.

Fageol Outboard Design Evolution
The
Fageol outboard version was the first large 4-cycle outboard commercially
available in the United States.
The block was vertically mounted to an outboard lower unit to produce a light weight economical competitor to gas-thirsty 2-cycle outboards dominating the industry.
Fageol offered single carburetor, dual carburetor and supercharger options increasing output up to 45 HP.
The outboard design went on to be acquired by two more companies who each produced outboards with upgrades and modifications as the Homelite 55hp, and Fisher Pierce Bearcat 55hp outboard motors.
