The Fageol 44 Vee-Drive Marine Engine and Propulsion Unit
The
new Fageol 44 marine engine (formally AeroJet)
is a complete inboard power package with Vee-Drive.
It was originally advertised at 26.5 hp then later options included the 30 hp standard model, the 35 hp dual carburetion model and the 45 hp Pepco supercharged model that were stated to be dependable, economical power packages that can make any boat an inboard.
In 1958, the standard Fageol 44 was rated at 40 HP, with an additional two 60 cu. in. models that had larger bores including the Fageol 60 at 50 HP, and the Fageol Gold Cup 60 at 55 HP.
The Fageol 44 V.I.P. all in one Vertical Inboard Power Unit

The Fageol VIP Vertical Inboard Power unit was a complete marine unit that could be mounted through the hull of any boat. It was advertised to provide 40 hp and was packaged as a all in one drive unit.
It came complete with mounting hardware, 35 amp generator, reverse reduction gearbox and propeller. This new application of the Fageol 44 inboard engine gives you every advantage of inboard power with the vertical orientation and through hull propulsion drive unit.
Based on the 44 cu. in. Crosley automobile motor, the original Fageol V.I.P. developed 35 HP and sold 4000 units within 4 months of its introduction in August of 1956.
Louis J. Fageol, a famed race boat driver, designed the Fageol VIP 44 in 1955 while recovering after being thrown from the Slo-Mo-Shun V race boat in a qualifying run. Fageol served as president of the Twin Coach Company in Kent, Ohio after he took over in 1945 from the company chairperson and his father, Frank R. Fageol. Under Twin Coach, Louis launched a company venture into the marine industry.

Fageol Marine Products History
Powel Crosley developed a single overhead-camshaft engine as a military generator motor during World War II, and later Crosley’s engineers refined its design for automotive use to power his cars. Outside of Crosley automobiles, the engine continued to power generators and was used by small sports car and boat racers.
In
1952, Crosley sold the rights to the engine to General Tire, who renamed
the engine the AeroJet 44 for use in their Vee-Drive marine power units.
Then in 1955, General Tire sold the rights to avid boat racer Lou Fageol,
who continued to market it as a boat engine but added options such as
a dual-carburetor version as well as a supercharged version, high-compression
version and VIP (Vertical Inboard Power) marine units.
In 1958, Fageol Products was sold to William B. Crofton of Crofton Manufacturing
who was a boat-builder and marine equipment distributor in California
who continued producing parts and marine power units.
In 1961, Homelite bought the rights to the engine and increased the bore to a 59 cubic inch displacement. The basic motor design itself survived on as the Homelite 55 HP outboard until in 1966 Fisher Pierce of Boston Whaler boats bought the rights renaming it the Fisher-Pierce Bearcat outboard, which he manufactured up until 1972.
Prior to the 44's, Fageol offered the FM 200 and FM 225 gasoline marine engines. Both of these six-cylinder engines were advertised "for vertical or horizontal operation". The FM200 was rated for 200HP at 3200 RPM, the FM225 for 225HP at 3400 RPM.
