Firestone Outboard Boat Motor Model Identification

Firestone Outboard Model and Year Guide

Locate the Firestone outboard serial number identification plate by looking on your motor's transom mounting bracket.

Figure 1 shows the motor serial number and model number on an identification plate attached to the support plate on the inside transom clamp mount. Always indicate these numbers in all correspondence to properly identify the motor, and to ensure that the correct parts and service literature are obtained when ordering.

About: Firestone Outboards

The Firestone Outboard brand was distributed through the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. Firestone Tire Company sold outboards under the Champion brand from 1939-1942. These were produce for Champion, by a small Tool and Punch Press company owned by C.E. Scott and H.B. Atwater of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

After World War II, Firestone Tire Co. contracted with the newly formed Scott-Atwater Company. The Firestone brand of outboard appeared in 1946 and were manufactured by the " Scott-Atwater" Company through 1959. McCulloch purchased "Scott-Atwater" in 1956 and continued the contract with Firestone until 1959.

The Firestone contract was given to West Bend in 1960 and they produced Firestone outboards through 1962, which was the last year that Firestone offered a full engine line. From 1963 through 1965 Firestone only offered a 5 horsepower made by Clinton. This outboard was called a Firestone Featherweight.

Firestone outboard motors are manufactured for Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. by Hartford Division, West Bend Company, Hartford, Wisconsin, or by McCulloch Corporation, Los Angeles, California. Service procedures on these units will not differ greatly from those given for similar motors bearing manufacturer's brand name. This does not necessarily mean, however, that parts are interchangeable.

• Firestone outboard motors were manufactured through 1959 by Scott Atwater and from 1960 on by West Bend.
• Firestone models may have different paint, decals, or hoods but service and parts information is likely similar for the equivalent Scott Atwater or West Bend model.
