About: Nissan Outboard Production
Nissan Marine began their North American operations in 1984 in Memphis, Tennessee as a division of Nissan Industrial Equipment Co. Over the next 6 years, the Marine Division experienced explosive growth, and in 1991 Nissan Marine was separated from Nissan Industrial Equipment into a standalone company. Nissan outboard motors were produced by Tohatsu Corporation, and in the U.S., Nissan Marine was one name under which Tohatsu outboards are sold.
In
late 2014 Nissan Marine discontinued sales of their outboard motors
manufactured by Tohatsu Outboards, ending worldwide
sales of the Nisan outboard brand.
Tohatsu outboards are identical, and their parts and accessories are fully compatible with all existing Nissan Marine engines. Tohatsu North America dealers are able to provide parts, service and warranty support for all existing Nissan Marine outboards. Tohatsu continues to build outboards offering a full line of outboard boat motors from 2.5hp to 250hp.
Nissan Marine Outboard Motor Model Identification
For motors produced prior to 2003, complete the Request Form with the 5 digit serial number to request the model year.
For motors produced in 2003 and beyond, the serial number (6 numbers + 2 letters) will indicate the Production Year* of the motor using the 2 letter code at the end of the serial number. Look up each letter in the table below to determine the production year:
