British Seagull Outboard Model Identification

The serial number and identification letters ID stamp on British Seagull outboards is typically located below the crankcase. About: Marston / British Seagull Outboards

British Seagull was the design of John Marston's engineers at the Sunbeam Motorcycle Co. as they began to diversify into the marine market beginning in 1931 under the name Marston Seagull. Later John Way-hope and Bill Pinniger took over and by 1938 they moved to Poole Dorset, continuing production then as British Seagull up thru 1996.

In its heyday of the 1970s, British Seagull was selling over 80,000 motors a year – small, affordable, bullet-proof outboards for pushing the tender, dinghy or pocket cruiser along when the wind settled down.

The Model 170 was released in 1982 followed by the Model 125, and then the QB Series of British Seagull outboards where introduced at the 1987 London Boat Show with the 6hp Kingfisher, followed by the 5hp Osprey and the 4hp Curlew - offering the latest in 2-stroke technology.

Remaining parts-and-products inventory was purchased by John Williams in 1996. However, its successor, Sheridan Marine, as well as others still supply parts.
