From there, innovation continued to propel their outboard sector onward into development of today's high tech models.
Yamaha Marine Outboard Motor Model Identification Guide
Yamaha outboards manufactured between 1984-2004 have an identification label located on the outboard’s transom bracket. The top number is the Yamaha Model Number. The last letter in that model number identifies the engine Year. Check out the Yamaha outboard identification guide
To identify horse power and model, go to the port side (left side) of your motor where you will find the product information sticker or placard on the transom bracket.
The first line of the placard is the model code which includes the horse power. The secondary line is the prefix model code followed by the gear box shaft length and the six/seven-digit serial number. Yamaha has gradually phased out the older method of using an alphabetical system which corresponded with a year on a third line in the bottom right-hand corner. The following is the year list for your reference. –
