WetBike Personal Watercraft Introduction
The Original Spirit Marine Wetbike – “Hydrofoil Watercycle”
In 1978 parent company Arctco Inc. (Arctic Cat) attempted their first foray into the Water Sports market with its subsidiary Spirit Marine when they introduced the Wetbike personal watercraft which was produced along with several other companies and manufacturers up until 1992. It was marketed as the “Wetbike Watercycle” with platform skis, and propelled by a axial-flow waterjet drive.
Wetbike production ran from 1978 until 1992, with owner/manufacturer changes below
- Arctic Enterprises (ARCTCO Inc) i.e.
- Spirit Marine 1978-1982
- Sea Crest Inc. from 1983-1984
- WETCO Inc. from 1985-1986
- UltraNautics Corp. from 1987-1992
The Wetbike was invented by engineer Nelson Tyler in the late 1970s and released as a PWC (personal watercraft). Top speed was listed between 33 and 36 mph based on model.
- 1978 to 1984 used the 2 cylinder 723cc 50 hp Spirit reed-valve two-stroke engine
- 1985 to 1991 used the 2 cylinder 798cc Suzuki engine producing 60 hp
- 1992 offered a 3 cylinder 70 hp 1240cc Suzuki engine model
