WetJet Personal Watercraft Introduction

The original Wetjet PWC's started in 1985 when the Webb family established the business WetJet International in Paynesville Minnesota. These machines were manufactured at Koronis Parts Inc., Ed Webb’s snowmobile parts manufacturing business, and the design of the early Wet Jets were inspired by a snowmobile body utilizing a wide trimaran hull with a unique manta ray-shaped bow. The Cuyuna 428 engine was also borrowed from the Brut snowmobile chassis.

Mastercraft acquired the emerging WetJet International, Ltd. brand and its assets in January 1993 for $700,000. Then the Wet Jet was redesigned from scratch and emerged with a modern V-shaped hull. The first PWC in the fleet was the WetJet Duo 200, introduced in 1994 with following production models from 1994 through 1997 under the same WetJet brand.

The 1994 WetJet Duo 200 was the first new hull model released with a 440 Brut engine rated at 50 HP and top speed of 40mph. The 1995 WetJet Duo 300 got a slightly larger hull and a more powerful 701 Yamaha marine engine producing 75 HP, with a top speed of 50 mph.

MasterCraft expanded its 1995 lineup to two new models, namely the Kraze and the ZX which shared the same hull and features as the Duo 300. The Kraze utilized a Westcoast pipe and intake manifold and a larger, 46mm Mikuni carburetor, which enabled the engine to produce 85 HP. In the 1996 model year, MasterCraft only offered the Duo, but for 1997 the ZX and the Karze made a comeback.

Mastercraft WetJet 701 Yamaha Engine Models

1995-1997 Wet Jet models including the Duo300, 300ZX and Kraze came with some or all of the following "performance modifications" on the Yamaha 61x 650/701 motors:

  • Westcoast intake manifold with reed stuffers and Yamaha 61x reeds and blocks
  • True 46mm SBN Mikuni with "unique" stud spacing (wider than a typical 44SBN)
  • Westcoast head with 31cc domes. (OEM type gasket, compression is 160-ish psi.)
  • Westcoast exhaust like B1s and SJs, except the front chamber had rearward exit.

Which had what?

  • All models used the Westcoast exhaust system.
  • All of the Kraze's had the Westcoast intake manifold and 46mm carb.
  • Some of the Kraze's had an OEM 61x head, instead of Westcoast head
  • Some 300's/300ZX's had OEM 61x head, intake manifold and 44SBN carb.
  • All 3 of the Wet Jet models equipped with 61x Yamaha motors were rated at 75hp
  • WetJet gold paint was applied right over the OEM Yamaha paint, no disassembly
