Western Auto's first step into the outboard sales market began with the brand name Western Flyer Outboards which were sourced from outboard manufacturer Gale Products.

Western Flyer outboard motors were produced in two horsepower ratings including 2.5hp and 5hp for model years 1941 and 1942, followed by production ending due to governmental rationing of vital materials duringworld war II.

These models are easy to identify if they still contain the Western Flyer decals since these were the only outboards ever produced with the Western Flyer brand name.

Western Flyer Outboard Motors were sold by Western Auto Supply Company through their auto parts stores and franchises nationwide. This included 2.5 and 5 horsepower outboards manufactured by OMC's Gale Products Division.

Western Auto Supply Company, (Western Auto) started as a mail order business with their first automobile parts and accessories retail store being established in 1921. There were over 1,200 retail chain store locations nationwide, including company-owned stores, and over 4,000 associate "private franchised" dealer stores.

Their auto supply company was started in 1909 in Kansas City, Missouri, and was bought by Beneficial Corporation in 1961, who sold to Wesray Capital in 1985, with Sears acquiring it in 1988 for $402 million including a $250 million ($19 per share) stock purchase, and $152 million debt assumption. Sears entered an agreement to sell Western Auto to Advance Auto Parts in 1998, with the resulting merger putting an end to the Western Auto brand name and franchise by 2003.

Western Flyer branded outboards were superseded when Western Auto changed brand names to Wizard Branded Outboards after the war, which were supplied by several outboard manufacturers.
